Over the last 35 years, IFAD and the Government of Indonesia have invested more than US$1 billion in rural people to strengthen inclusive and environmentally sustainable economic growth. Our work concentrates on helping smallholder producers and marginalized groups to become more resilient, integrate into supply chains and gain access to services, technologies and finance. IFAD's projects have been successful in the most remote and vulnerable areas of the country, which also usually have the highest incidence of poverty.

IFAD's current results-based country strategic opportunities programme (2016-2019) aims to support inclusive rural transformation so rural people can achieve sustainable livelihoods. We work to achieve this by providing financing and technical support to develop models for replication and scaling up by the government and others. The emphasis is on empowering marginalized groups including smallholder farmers and fisheries producers, women and woman-headed households, marginal communities and ethnic minorities in selected geographic areas, and youth.

Since 1985, International Rivers has been at the heart of the global struggle to protect rivers and the rights of communities that depend on them.

We work with an international network of dam-affected people, grassroots organizations, environmentalists, human rights advocates and others who are committed to stopping destructive river projects and promoting better options.

We seek a world where healthy rivers and the rights of local communities are valued and protected. We envision a world where water and energy needs are met without degrading nature or increasing poverty, and where people have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives.

Based in four continents, our staff has expertise in big dams, energy and water policy, climate change, and international financial institutions. We support partner organizations and dam-affected people by providing advice, training and technical assistance, and advocating on their behalf with governments, banks, companies and international agencies. The focus of our work is in Latin America, Asia and Africa.

This integrated irrigation and water system is located on the Cisanggarung River, Kuningan, West Java in the form of a dam. This is one of the projects in 65 new water initiative by government during 2015-2019. The purpose of this initiative is to increase food security, energy, and national raw water supply.

By the time it's finished, this dam can produce approximately 500 kW of hydroelectric power that can be utilized by surrounding community. In addition, it will produce 300 liters per second of raw water and irrigates 3,000 hectares, so the local community does not have to worry about the availability of clean water. Such system will be divided into two irrigation areas, namely Cileuweung area of 1,000 hectares and Jangkelok reaching 2,000 hectares of rice fields. The area of the dam of Kuningan dam covers 5 villages and 2 subdistricts, namely Cibeureum (Randusari Village, Kawungsari Village, Sukarapih Village) and Karangkencana Subdistrict (Tanjungkerta Village and Simpang Jaya Village) in Kuningan Regency. This project is under the supervision of Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PU).

Makara is initiated by Christa Nooy, an Indonesia specialist with over 25 years’ experience in coordinating sustainable development projects and an extensive network of environmental organizations in Indonesia and Asia. Local communities that actively protect their natural habitats are central to her work. With Makara she develops projects with environmental organizations, knowledge institutions, governments and companies on sustainable river management. She is one of the initiators of the RVO funded aksibrantas project in East-Java and currently consultant Community Participation and NGO liaison to this project. She works through the Dutch Nedworc Foundation, a trustworthy partner that handles assignments for independent consultants and organizations operating in the international development cooperation sector.

Makara would like to introduce YUYU River Education Islands to East Java, an initiative that is developed with NorthernLight, an Amsterdam-based world renowned Dutch creative agency, and the Indonesian environmental NGO ECOTON based in Gresik, East Java. Our pledge is to build a series of floating education islands that will travel to - and work with – local communities around the world to co-create solutions to prevent plastic waste.

The first YUYU education island is designed for and with ECOTON. See the brochure (Files menu on the Portal) for an impression of this education island. The target group in this concept are schoolchildren and students, but education activities may also address the wider community. Our initial plan was to locate this island in the Brantas river, which so far has proven to be challenging because of its status as a national strategic river basin.

YUYU River Education Islands would introduce a floating education island to East Java that offers the following cultural eco systems services: esthetics, inspiration and education. YUYU’s are designed to inspire, educate and activate. Inspire with the beauty of rivers, lakes and estuaries, and the life in and around them. Educate about the plastic pollution, health and biodiversity. Activate people with a learning by doing, hands-on approach. This is why these education islands are floating on the water. People need to interact with their environment in order to adapt and learn.

The estuary where Welang river and Brantas-Porong river flow into can be suggested as a possible location for a YUYU island. The estuary with its mangroves could offer an ideal location: on one hand, the mangroves show the seriousness of the problem at a glance because they are covered in plastics (see photos in Albums). On the other hand, they have potential to become a place for place for recreation and ecotourism, and to give people a sense of belonging to nature. A YUYU education island could help maximize this potential.

The YUYU education program would be managed by ECOTON who has a network of NGOs in Welang basin. Since part of the plastics in the estuary are coming from Welang river, the education program may include an interactive campaign that travels to upstream communities. See the Brantas XOXO campaign that is now running within the aksibrantas program.

It’s 1873. Dr Bruno Johannes Tideman, chief engineer of the Royal Navy and adviser to the shipbuilding industry, carries out the first ship model tests in The Netherlands to determine the ship’s resistance and the required engine capacity. It is a professional challenge to make uncontrollable waves, wind and water ultimately manageable. With this very same drive the ‘Netherlands Ship Model Basin’ began its work in 1932. Today, known as MARIN, we are an internationally operating and recognised leading independent institution based in Wageningen with about 400 specialists who together realise a turnover of approximately €45 million. At present our challenge in essence is the same but we have broadened our view. How do we use our hydrodynamic and nautical research to make ships, platforms, wind turbines, harbours – any construction on or in the water – cleaner, safer and smarter?
